The Civil Litigation and International Law Department

The Civil Litigation and International Law Department is mandated to provide legal services to the Government, in the areas of public law, private law, administrative law, constitutional law, and international law. The Department also provides legal services to Government Ministries, Departments, Agencies and The Gambia’s overseas missions, with an emphasis on adherence to Rule of Law, Good Governance and Justice for all. Under the leadership of the Attorney General and Solicitor General and Legal Secretary, the Department represents the Government of The Gambia before all national, regional and international courts and tribunals. The Department is therefore instrumental in the fulfilment of the Attorney General’s role as the chief legal adviser of the Government. It is headed by a Director and consists of Principal State Counsel, Senior State Counsel, State Counsel, Pupil State Counsel and Legal Clerks.

The Civil Litigation and International Law Department has two dedicated units dealing with Human and Child’s Right matters. The units were formed in 2003 with the objectives of coordinating activities relating to human rights most especially on women and child rights and preparation and compilation of the Governments reports to regional and international treaty bodies.
